The Procedure

What happens at your coil fitting appointment

01

Pre-procedure consultation

our doctor will confirm which coil is right for you, take a brief history, and answer any questions. Included in the appointment fee.

02

Preparation

Take 400mg ibuprofen 1 hour before your appointment. This significantly reduces cramping during the procedure.

03

The fitting — approximately 5 minutes

You'll feel similar discomfort to period cramps. our doctor explains each step as it happens. You remain in control throughout and can ask to stop at any time.

04

Recovery

A few minutes of rest afterwards, then you're free to go. Light cramping for 1–2 days is normal. Driving and most normal activities are fine the same day.

05

Thread check at 6 weeks

A brief appointment to confirm the coil is in the correct position. our doctor can arrange this at the clinic or advise you to have it done at your GP practice.

Which coil?

Mirena IUS — The most commonly fitted hormonal coil. Lasts up to 8 years. Releases a small amount of progestogen locally, which usually lightens or stops periods. Also used as the progesterone component of HRT.

Kyleena IUS — Smaller than Mirena, with a lower hormone dose. Lasts up to 5 years. May suit women who have not had children or who prefer a lower hormone option.

Copper IUD — Completely hormone-free. Lasts up to 10 years. Periods may be heavier initially. The most effective emergency contraception if fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex.

Is the coil painful to fit?

Most women experience discomfort similar to period cramps, which passes within a few minutes. The level of discomfort varies between individuals. our doctor's FSRH Advanced training and extensive experience means the procedure is performed efficiently and with care — the anticipation is almost always worse than the reality.
