Choose a method to explore what's involved — step by step

The Coil

A small device fitted inside the uterus. The hormonal coil (Mirena/IUS) releases a low dose of progestogen locally. The copper coil (IUD) is completely hormone-free. Both are over 99% effective.

What happens at your appointment

1

Brief consultation to confirm suitability, discuss type and answer your questions.

2

You'll be asked to take ibuprofen beforehand to help with comfort during the procedure.

3

The fitting itself takes around 5 minutes. Most women experience period-like cramping.

4

You rest for a few minutes afterwards, then you're free to go home — driving and most activities are fine the same day.

5

A thread check at 6 weeks is recommended to confirm position. our doctor can arrange this.

The Implant

A small, flexible rod (Nexplanon) inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a low, steady dose of progestogen and is over 99% effective. Completely reversible.

TypeNexplanon (etonogestrel implant)
DurationUp to 3 years
HormonesProgestogen only — no oestrogen
PeriodsVariable — lighter, irregular or may stop
Appointment~15 minutes · Local anaesthetic used
RecoverySame day · Some bruising for a few days
Suitable ifCan't take oestrogen · Want something you don't have to think about

What happens at your appointment

1

Brief consultation to confirm suitability, discuss your medical history and answer questions.

2

Local anaesthetic is injected into the upper arm — this is the only significant discomfort involved.

3

The implant is inserted using a small applicator. You may feel a little pressure but not pain.

4

A small dressing is applied. You can drive home and return to normal activities immediately.

5

our doctor will advise when contraceptive cover begins — usually immediate if inserted at the right time in your cycle.

Coil & Implant Removal

Both the coil and implant can be removed at any time — fertility returns quickly. our doctor offers removal of devices fitted elsewhere, not just those fitted at this clinic.

Coil removal~5 minutes · Usually straightforward · Mild cramping
Implant removal~10 minutes · Local anaesthetic · Small incision
FertilityReturns immediately after removal for both
ReplacementA new device can be fitted at the same appointment if wanted
NoteDifficult removals (e.g. impalpable implants) may require ultrasound — our doctor will advise

Coil removal — what to expect

1

No special preparation required — come as you are.

2

our doctor will locate the threads and remove the coil with a gentle pull. Most women feel mild cramping for a few seconds.

3

The whole procedure typically takes under five minutes. You're free to leave immediately.

4

If you'd like a replacement fitted at the same visit, this can be arranged in advance.

Why Private?

The difference a private appointment makes

NHS coil and implant services vary enormously. Private care gives you control over timing, comfort, and who performs the procedure.

01

Choose your appointment

Same-week availability, including evenings and Saturdays. No waiting months for an NHS slot at an inconvenient time.

02

Time to ask questions

A rushed NHS appointment may leave you uncertain about which option is right for you. Here there's time to discuss everything properly before the procedure.

03

Expert hands

our doctor holds an FSRH Advanced qualification and a DRCOG — the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. Coil fitting and implants are a core part of her practice, not an occasional task.

04

Consistent care

Your consultation, procedure and follow-up are all with our doctor. No being handed between nurses, registrars and GPs.

Nervous about the procedure?

That's completely normal — and it's one of the most common things women tell us before their appointment.

our doctor takes time before every procedure to explain exactly what will happen, answer any questions, and make sure you're comfortable to proceed. You are always in control, and the appointment can stop at any point.

Most women find the experience much more manageable than they expected. The anticipation is almost always worse than the procedure itself.
